February is National Heart Month

Category : heart disease

As quoted from www.cdc.gov

About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of disability. The most common heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack. In 2010, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a new coronary attack, and about 470,000 had a recurrent attack. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one.

The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or a stroke in the future. For more information on heart disease and stroke, visit CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention.

Diseases and Conditions That Put Your Heart at Risk
Other conditions that affect your heart or increase your risk of death or disability include arrhythmia, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and secondhand smoke are also risk factors associated with heart disease. For a full list of diseases and conditions along with risk factors and other health information associated with heart disease, visit the American Heart Association.

Know Your Signs and Symptoms
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense; however, most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help.

Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:
Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.

Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

The American Heart Association, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the American Red Cross, and the National Council on Aging have launched a new “Act in Time” campaign to increase people’s awareness of heart attack and the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately at the onset of heart attack symptoms.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects
A report by The Institute of Medicine finds even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can trigger a heart attack. Tobacco smoke can cause health problems not only for smokers, but also for people around them. Breathing secondhand smoke increases a person’s risk for a heart attack and other heart conditions.

Visit the CDC Office on Smoking and Health Web site for more detailed information about the IOM Report on Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects include the following:

* Analysis of the report findings.
* Animation of how secondhand smoke affects the cardiovascular system.
* CDC statement on report findings.

Healthy Lifestyle: Diet and Nutrition, Exercise and Fitness
A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons you have to fight heart disease. Many people make it harder than it is. It is important to remember that it is the overall pattern of the choices you make that counts. As you make daily food choices, read nutrition labels and base your eating pattern on these recommendations:

* Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fat.
* Select fat-free, 1% fat, and low-fat dairy products.
* Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet.
* Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day.
* Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars.
* Select and purchase foods lower in salt/sodium.
* If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day if you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man.
* Keep an eye on your portion sizes.

Physical activity in your daily life is an important step to preventing heart disease. You can take a few simple steps at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life.

Women and Heart Disease: Quick Facts
Although heart disease is sometimes thought of as a “man’s disease,” it is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States, and women account for nearly 50% of heart disease deaths.

In 2007, heart disease was the cause of death in 306,246 females.

Heart disease is often perceived as an “older woman’s disease,” and it is the leading cause of death among women aged 65 years and older. However, heart disease is the third leading cause of death among women aged 25–44 years and the second leading cause of death among women aged 45–64 years. Remember that many cases of heart disease can be prevented!

Men and Heart Disease: Quick Facts
* In 2007, heart disease was the cause of death in 309,821 American men.
* The average age for a first heart attack for men is 66 years.
* Almost half of men who have a heart attack under age 65 die within 8 years.
* Between 70% and 89% of sudden cardiac events occur in men.

1. Thyroid Function Blood Testing Panel 2

The Thyroid Function Blood Profile with TSH, T3 and T4 Free is a group of blood tests that includes Free T3, Free T4 and TSH that are often ordered together to help evaluate thyroid gland function and to help diagnose thyroid disorders. The thyroid tests included in a thyroid profile measure the amount of thyroid hormones in your blood. These hormones are chemical substances that travel through the bloodstream and control or regulate your body’s metabolism—how it functions and uses energy.

We recommend a thyroid test for anyone who:
• has a family member with thyroid disease,
• has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome
• is a woman in or near menopause,
• has recently given birth,
• has other pituitary or endocrine disease, or
• is experiencing symptoms of thyroid disease.

2. Vitamin D, 25 Hydroxy

Vital to healthy bones. Deficiency can be related to prostate, breast and colon cancers; heart disease, type 1 diabetes and hypertension.

Recent studies in North America and Europe indicate that a staggering 95 percent of people are vitamin D deficient — not surprising given how much time we spend inside.

Sunlight doesn’t just help set your internal clock, it actually nourishes your body by helping it create vitamin D. Classified as a water-soluble vitamin, vitamin D acts more like a hormone, working with the parathyroid hormone to balance calcium in the blood and build strong bones. It also maintains healthy cellular growth and regulates the immune system, which prevents excessive inflammation that can lead to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, periodontal disease, multiple sclerosis and irritable-bowel diseases.

3. Iron Panel

An iron panel from HealthCheckUSA is a blood screening for the iron overload disease, hemochromatosis. This genetic disorder causes your body to absorb and store too much iron. This extra iron builds up and causes organ damange. An iron profile is important because if hemochromatosis is not treated, these organs can fail. You could even need a transplant.

How does iron work in the body?
A normal person’s body absorbs enough iron through a regular diet. Iron is an essential nutrient, which becomes part of your blood that transports oxygen throughout the body. If your iron profile shows that you have hemochromatosis, your body absorbs more than it needs. There is no natural function to expel this excess iron, and it is typically stored in body tissues.

Hemochromatosis
JULY IS NATIONAL HEMOCHROMATOSIS AWARENESS MONTH

As one of the most common genetic disorders in America, hereditary hemochromatosis means that your body absorbs and stores excess iron. If you have hereditary hemochromatosis, this extra iron is stored in the body and organs like liver, skin, and pancreas. If it’s not treated, hereditary hemochromatosis can lead to iron deposits that damage those organs and tissues.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder caused by a mutated HFE gene. This gene controls iron absorption.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is most often found in Caucasians with ancestors from Northern Europe. Almost one out of ten American Caucasians is a carrier for hereditary hemochromatosis. Hereditary hemochromatosis is uncommon is African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians.

Without being previously tested, most people don’t know that they have hereditary hemochromatosis until middle-age. Most symptoms don’t develop until after thirty for men, and after fifty for women.

If hereditary hemochromatosis is not diagnosed and treated, iron accumulations could potentially lead to serious problems like arthritis, liver issues, congestive heart failure, impotence, skin pigmentation, and pancreas damage.

Women’s Heart Disease Awareness Raised on Wear Red Day

Category : heart disease

Today, February 6, is Wear Red Day, also known as National Heart Today. Meant to raise awareness for women’s heart disease, Wear Red Day was started by the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Heart disease symptoms for women are typically much more subtle than heart disease symptoms for men. The American Heart Association released some statistics regarding heart disease and women, such as how it’s 52% more likely for women to experience delays in getting treatment after calling 911 to report cardiac symptoms. Also, women are more likely to die from severe heart attacks once they’re in the hospital.

Women’s heart disease symptoms can include unusual fatigue, indigestion, anxiety and shortness of breath. During a heart attack, symptoms can be weakness, a cold sweat and dizziness. Some things that put people at risk for having heart disease are obesity, smoking and a family history of heart disease.

Take a Heart Disease Test

Heart disease is currently the leading cause of death in the world. In the United States alone, heart disease kills one person every 34 seconds. Getting a heart disease test is very important if you believe you’re at risk or have a family history of heart disease. Take a heart disease test at one of HealthCheckUSA’s many lab locations across the United States.

Heart Disease and Poor Sleep

Category : heart disease

A recent study has linked poor sleep to heart disease, says a very interesting recent article in Forbes. Specifically, researchers found that for elderly people with high blood pressure, getting less than 7.5 hours of sleep per night can increase their chance of heart disease.

They tracked the sleep of 1,255 people — the average age was 70.4 years — and followed their health for about 50 months. During the follow-up, there were 99 cardiovascular disease events such as stroke, heart attack and sudden cardiac death.

Over 1,200 people with an average age of 70.4 years were a part of the study, and for 50 months researchers tracked their sleep and followed their health. Those who got less than 7.5 hours of sleep per night were at the highest risk for heart disease. Basically, findings showed that in elderly individuals with hypertension, a shorter sleep duration is a predictor.

The researchers noted that in modern societies people are simply getting less sleep. And getting enough sleep can help prevent obesity and diabetes—as well as many heart disease risk factors. In short, getting a good night’s sleep every night is essential to good health.

Heart Disease: Are You at Risk?

Are you at risk for heart disease? Some things that can put you at risk for heart disease are: smoking, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, stress and being obese or overweight. A family history of heart disease may also put you at risk.

Take a Heart Disease Test

Take a heart disease test if you’re at risk—taking the test can no doubt be beneficial to your health. The heart disease test offered at HealthCheckUSA is the most comprehensive health assessment we have to offer. This heart disease test is ideal for those who would like to establish or keep track of their overall baseline levels, and it’s offered at several of our laboratory locations across the country.
