Did you know that one lab test provides more than 50 health screens for women? If you decide to do anything for yourself during the holidays, do this.
Kick off the season with a lab test that provides 50 measures of health, including a complete blood count, cholesterol check, screens for diabetes, kidney and liver function, thyroid hormone levels and iron levels.
Choose a lab test that includes a complete blood count. A “CBC” is used to check for disorders such as anemia and infection and leukemia by examining different parts of the blood—including red and white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelets.
Your blood test should include lipid and triglycerides screens (cholesterol) and a blood glucose measure—which is important in diagnosing and managing diabetes.
Because the thyroid is so critical for overall health, choose a lab “assay” that includes a screen for thyroid hormone levels. Hormones dictate everything from efficient processing of food to moods and body temperature. When the body produces too much or too little of these hormones, it can cause a range of physical conditions that diminish quality of life.
Whether you use it as a baseline or are considering a women’s health profile because you have a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, liver disease or diabetes—make it a priority.
